The results are in! Join VtVN and the Rutgers Hub for Aging Collaboration for a first look at findings from the 2025 National Census of Villages—the first national snapshot of Villages in more than ten years. We’ll share early insights into how Villages are structured, what they offer, and how they operate, and invite conversation into what the findings mean for the future of Villages near and far.
The Rutgers School of Social Work offers a wide range of continuing education offerings focused on critical practice topics related aging and older adults, including a certificate programs in gerontology (both basic and advanced), senior housing issues, and senior services management.

Held in celebration of Older Americans Month, this event featured four cutting-edge research projects on age-friendly communities across the United States. The research teams shared updates from their recent projects to illuminate insights into the implementation and impact of age-friendly social change. The event highlighted the many points of synergy between research and local practice to strengthen the Age-Friendly Movement across systems levels.

We connected with our shared wisdom across generations in an activity that asked people from ages 5 to over 75 to share their "age and a piece of wisdom you have learned so far." This type of event is critical to building and leveraging the bonds across Rutgers for cutting-edge research on aging. Hub team members and community partners presented several presentations at the 2026 "On Aging" conference of the American Soceity On Aging. The presentations explored recent findings into Village organizational structures and the use of digital technologies, particularly AI, among age-friendly community initiatives.

This networking event brought together over 20 alumni and current students in the RUSSW Aging and Health Certificate program to build connections across social work careers address aging, spanning clinical practice, public sector leaders, community action and organizing, and long-term services and supports. This event was held in recognition of both Careers in Aging Month and National Social Work Month.

This in-person event, hosted by the Rutgers Foundation, brought together Rutgers alumni and a panel of Rutgers experts for a conversation about the latest insights into brain health as we age. The panel consisted of Rutgers research leaders spanning the Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders Research Center, Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, Rutgers Brain Health Institute, and the Rutgers Institute for Health, Health Care Policy and Aging Research.

Hub team members joined other leaders of the Village Movement at the 2025 Village to Village Network National Virtual Village Gathering for a session entitled, "Building a Data Foundation to Strengthen Villages and Prove their Value." The Rutgers team shared an update on a recently launched national project surveying all operational Villages.

Hub team members presented at the September meeting of the Lifelong Maine Learn and Share community of practice on ways age-friendly leaders report using Artificial Intelligence (AI) in their work, spanning generating public communications, internal materials, and brainstorms for strategic directions. The team discussed important ethical and practical considerations in using AI in age-friendly practice.

Dean Sandra Edmonds Crewe, the 2024-25 Sojourner Truth Visiting Professor for Race and Social Justice, presented a special lecture to students in the Aging & Health Certificate Program that explored the strengths and challenges of aging for Black older adults, weaving together powerful historical contexts, narratives, and theories to shed light on disparities in later life.

This 90-minute virtual summit convened global thought leaders on aging in community whose scholarship integrates research, theory, and practice to enhance work on community-centered initiatives and aging equity. Drawing attendees from over 17 countries, this global summit included three presentations, large-group reflection, and facilitated breakout room discussions. Presentation slides are available here.

Dr. Lauren Snedeker provided an overview of ageism and ways to promote age inclusivity through the application of the Liberatory Consciousness Model. The Liberatory Consciousness Model, developed by Dr. Barbara J. Love, empowers people to become aware of and resist age-based discrimination. Dr. Snedeker provided suggestions on ways to be more age-inclusive in the classroom and in the work environment at Rutgers School of Social Work and beyond.
